Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot for too long there are health risks. If a heatwave hits this summer, make sure the hot weather doesn't harm you or anyone you know.
Public Health England has issued their annual Heatwave plan for England to help communities and authorities better prepare and plan for severe summer temperatures.
Hot weather can cause your body to become dehydrated and overheat, leading to exhaustion or heatstroke. Following the advice below should help you look after yourself and others during the hot summer weather:
- Look after yourself, check on others especially the elderly
- Listen to the weather forecast and the news
- Plan ahead to avoid the heat
- Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks
- Dress appropriately for the weather
- Slow down and avoid heavy activity
- Be on the lookout for signs of heat related illness
- If you’re too hot, cool your skin with water and rehydrate
- Get help. Call NHS 111 or in an emergency 999
